Addiction is a lonely disease, and isolating and social distancing during this current COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t make it any less lonely. All around the globe, people in recovery are finding it challenging to stick to their recovery goals and maintain focus and motivation for sobriety. Certainly, this is dangerous and something that needs addressing. To help people who may be feeling down about their sobriety during this crazy time we’re living in, we’ve come up with 5 tips on how to stay sober you can use to maintain recovery and sobriety.
#1 – Staying 6 Feet Away Doesn’t Mean Staying Away
Your supportive community is an imperative part of your recovery success. But, we’re experiencing a situation in which it’s impossible or challenging to get together to meet up for that support. However, even if you can’t be with your supportive peers and recovery support specialists in person, that doesn’t mean you can’t get their support in other ways. Remember to reach out to those who are supportive about your sobriety routinely by calling, texting, scheduling face times, and even getting multiple people together for a Skype or Zoom call. Or, if you’re brave enough to wear a mask and get together, look up your local government health suggestions about how many people you can meet up with safely.
#2 – Remember This Isn’t Forever
It can be hard not to get caught up in the thought that what we’re experiencing will never cease. It’s hard to adapt when so many things are on pause, whether it be your work, social life, or even seeing family members regularly. However, it’s important not to focus on the negative. And, remember that things are going to be ok in the end. Furthermore, that one day, we will look back and this pandemic will all be a memory. If you can keep the positives in mind that this one day soon will end, you’ll be better equipped to handle the everyday challenges that come with living through this time. And, better prepared to keep to your recovery goals and maintain sobriety.
#3 – Remember Your Recovery Goals and Stick to Them
With all the negativity and despair happening, it’s hard to keep up with past goals and aspirations as they may feel like they don’t even matter anymore. But, in all reality, your goals do still matter – regardless of what’s going on in the world around you. And, you need to remember not to lose sight of these goals. When you’re feeling down about your recovery because of all the darkness in the world, remind yourself of the reason you chose sobriety. And, how far you’ve come on your recovery journey. Remember the benefits, whether that be learning more about yourself, repairing relationships, or even meeting new people on their own, personal journeys. When you focus on the positive and remind yourself of your commitment and how far you’ve come, you’re sure to feel better about your recovery.
#4 – Don’t Skip Out on Self Care
Self-care is a great tool to use if you’re wondering how to stay sober during this pandemic. Self-care efforts can work to boost your mood and maintain recovery focus. Fortunately, there are a number of self-care activities to choose from, so if yoga or exercise doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can always try riding your bike or taking a relaxing bubble bath instead.
Some self-care activities to consider include:
- Going for a run
- Practicing mindfulness and yoga
- Enrolling into online workout classes
- Hiking in your local parks
- Eating healthy, nutritious meals
- Taking part in your favorite hobbies
#5 – Remember to be Kinder to Yourself
It’s hard to be nice to everyone, let alone be nice to yourself. With all that’s going on, the worrying and anxiety surrounding the unknown and future are easily overwhelming. So, practice being kinder to yourself by speaking inwardly positive affirmations and accept yourself as you are. Don’t forget that you are only human, you make mistakes, and are deserving of love and forgiveness. So, give yourself a break when your emotions or thoughts start to get out of control. And, gradually and kindly get back to a place of peace so you may protect your sobriety and continue on your road to recovery.
