When you hold on to all the negative feelings you have for yourself during recovery from eating disorders, you only increase your risk for relapsing. So, it’s helpful to do things that spark the ability to get to know yourself better. Thus, engaging in a relationship with yourself. And, ending up liking who you’ve become! To practice this, start by identifying one thing you like about yourself each day. Plus, focus on writing down and working toward your goals with every new day. Eventually, you will start to see your own worth and become your own biggest supporter.
2. Be Easy on Yourself
Don’t forget to be nice to yourself by offering yourself some compassion. You’re not perfect, but neither is anyone else. And, being overly critical of oneself can lead you to want to self-medicate feelings of self-doubt and insecurity with past eating disorder behaviors. So, it’s critical to understand that being easy on yourself is important. To practice self-compassion, work on providing yourself with daily advice you’d tell your own loved ones. These include simple words of encouragement like, “you are enough” and “you deserve happiness and love”.
3. Empower Others by Telling Your Story
Another great to begin building self confidence is to speak about your recovery journey to others. While many recovery groups, like AA, talk about anonymity, it’s not required to have a successful recovery journey. In fact, becoming non anonymous about your eating disorder journey can have a number of benefits. These include helping others to find their own ways to recovery. And, boosting self confidence in realizing, as you tell others, how far you’ve come on your journey to healing. Plus, all that you’ve been through to get where you are now; in recovery.
4. Surround Yourself with Support
You always feel good about yourself when you have good people surrounding you. So, make sure the people you spend time with are supportive of your recovery. This may mean making some hard decisions about who not to spend time with. However, if you’re serious about building self confidence and providing yourself with the best means to a successful recovery, you’ll do what it takes to protect your efforts.
5. Get Out and Have Some Fun
It’s hard not to feel confident when you’re having fun. Plus, we only live once, so what’s the point if we’re not having fun? Think of ways to get out and enjoy yourself in building self confidence. But, remember, make sure to choose activities that don’t include relapse triggers. This way, you protect your recovery while you have the fun time you deserve.
