Defining Complex Trauma Disorder
As we mentioned just a second ago, there are multiple kinds of trauma. Each one affects people in different ways. And they have specific causes. One type of trauma that a lot of people are dealing with is complex trauma disorder. This kind of trauma is characterized by more than one events where a person is exposed to a traumatic event. To put it more simply, when a person has complex trauma, it means that she has repeatedly witnessed or experienced something traumatic. For example, a person may have been emotionally abused over and over again for years. Or, a child may have witnessed numerous episodes of domestic abuse. This kind of chronic exposure to traumatic events can cause a person to develop a complex trauma disorder and deal with the negative effects of that disorder. Trauma affects people in very extreme ways. Individuals may experience the effects quite often.
Some of the common effects of complex trauma disorder are:
- Feelings of helplessness
- Lack of trust
- Low self-esteem
- Lack of self-respect
- Thoughts of suicide
Many times, a person who has been exposed to traumatic experiences over and over again deal with very negative effects. And those effects can lead people to feel overwhelmed and unable to properly deal with them. So, unfortunately, some people turn to drugs or alcohol for relief from the unpleasant effects of trauma. As a result, substance dependence, abuse, and even addiction develop.
