What to Expect from Eating Disorder Treatment

Going into eating disorder treatment can be scary because of all of the unknowns. It’s important instead to think of it as a wonderful step towards getting happier, healthier, and stronger! The fact is that of all the people who need eating disorder treatment, less than one third actually gets treatment. Combined with the fact that anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, this is a scary statistic.

Arriving at Eating Disorder Treatment

When arriving at treatment at any level, you will go through a medical exam, as well as a psychological analysis. This is to establish a baseline for the severity of your eating disorder, and to begin the best, most customized treatment that is appropriate for your needs.

There are different levels of treatment that range from residential treatment – which means that you live at your treatment center or an affiliated housing, to outpatient treatment that may just be a few hours per week. The level of care you partake in depends on the severity of your disorder and the time your personal life allows you to devote to your recovery. Remember, this is a huge step in getting healthy, and you should put as much time as possible into treatment.

The Process of Treatment

During treatment, you will participate in various kinds of therapy. The two main kinds are group therapy and individual therapy. All of the different kinds of therapy are geared towards allowing you to learn about your disorder and ways to cope. The goal is to get you to recognize patterns and developing new coping skills so that you don’t slip back into anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating.

During group meetings you will be with your peers and cover various topics. These kinds of group sessions are always moderated by a therapist so that they can guide the conversation and prevent cross talk. All groups are designed to be supportive and informative.

You will also participate in individual therapy. During these sessions, you will have one-on-one time with your therapist and be able to delve deeper into issues surrounding your disorder that you may not feel comfortable talking about in a group. Your therapist can address your specific needs more thoroughly and help guide you individually.

Treatment will also consist of learning about nutrition. The goal is to shift your mindset from abusing your body to lovingly nourishing your body with the right food. Education is offered to help you figure out your best dietary needs.

Treatment Is The Start of a New Life

Coming to treatment with an open mind is crucial. This is a time to better yourself. It is also a time to learn about yourself and why you do the things you do. It is an incredible self-exploration that your average person is not able to partake it. The more you can commit to getting out of eating disorder treatment, the better chance you will have of living the rest of your life happy, healthy, and strong.
