Wanting to begin the new year with a few healthy goals? New year’s resolutions can be a great tool to encourage yourself to accomplish things. However, some resolutions can be harmful for people recovering from eating disorders and trying to instill healthy behaviors. Specifically, resolutions surrounding losing weight or restricting eating. Instead of making resolutions that are overwhelming to a person instilling new, healthy boundaries with eating, it’s important to focus on bettering yourself in other areas. So, we’ve come up with a few healthy new year’s resolutions to consider this year!
Set an Alarm for Bed Time
Want to get more sleep? Getting enough sleep is great for our health, both mental and physical. It’s important for emotional regulation. And, can benefit the heart and even boost the immune system – helping your body stay healthy and fight off any potential dangers. So, giving yourself the extra motivation to go to bed on time and get enough sleep is a great healthy new year’s resolution to make. One way to implement a healthy sleep schedule is to set a timer for when you want to wind down for the night and start your bedtime routine. For example, set an alarm for 45 minutes before you want to go to sleep. This way, even if you’re not thinking of going to bed at that time every night, you’ll know to stop what you’re doing and start the process of winding down.
Try to Get a Few Walks in Every Week
Being out in nature is one of the most effective ways to invoke mindfulness. Mindfulness is a way to remain in the present moment, which can be helpful for dealing with stress, anxiety, and mood management. Going for a walk can help you get out into nature and take in what you have around you – the beauty of nature. And, not to mention, the added benefits of walking, which is a cardiovascular exercise that helps maintain heart, lung, and muscle health. A good, healthy near year’s resolution is to go for a walk a few times a week out in nature, whether that’s around your neighborhood or in a nearby park.
Take a Break from Technology
It’s easy to get caught up in the technology that seems to run the world today. Everyone has a small computer in their pocket at the ready. It can be overwhelming thinking about all the time we spend on our tablets, smartphones, and computers. And, studies suggest that spending time away from these devices can be good for our mental health. So, if you feel that you’re spending too much time on your favorite devices, give yourself the resolution to take a break. For example, determine that you won’t check your phone if you’re at the dinner table. Or, you won’t use your phone after a certain time at night.

Resolutions can be harmful if they’re based on unhealthy goals for oneself. Setting goals to lose weight by a certain time or to stop eating a certain food altogether can be a red flag that a person may be experiencing disordered eating.
