Criticizing others’ beliefs, opinions, and feelings will allow them to be untrustful of you. It can be hard to own up to things that you have done or said while in active addiction, but it is vital to the health of your relationships. Owning up to your own thoughts and actions will provide your loved ones with the knowledge that you are working towards becoming an accountable and trustworthy individual. Be quick to ask for forgiveness and to take accountability for hurting a loved one at all times.

Practice Patience

You may have heard the phrase, “patience is a virtue”. Well, it is an important and necessary virtue to develop in addiction recovery. If you show patience and respect for others’ thoughts, opinions, and ideas they will likely show the same courtesy to you. Also, it may take time for your loved ones who you have hurt while in active addiction to forgive you and trust you once more. Be patient with them as being aggressive will only push them away further. It takes time to show others that you have changed. Also, it can take time for someone to be open to forgiveness. Try to picture how you would feel if you were standing in their shoes; show empathy for others as they try to learn forgiveness.
