Drug rehab centers give hope to individuals and their families struggling with drug addiction. Certainly, the provide the safe atmospheres, therapeutic outlets, and necessary information needed to obtain a life of recovery. However, unfortunately, the experience of drug rehab isn’t always enough to guide an individual to a state of long term sobriety. In this article, we aim to spread awareness about why drug rehab centers may fail their patients. This way, those looking for addiction healing can look for and find a treatment center that gives them the best shot at establishing lifelong recovery. Additionally, we go over situations in which individuals may not get the best from their drug rehab centers due to personal experiences. This way, people willing to get help through treatment can go to rehab with the right mindset, giving them the best chance of success.
1. Returning to an Environment That Enables Addiction
One of the main reasons that drug rehab centers may not work for people is because they go back to the environment they were before treatment began. Thus, putting themselves back into situations where family, friends, and others still abuse drugs or alcohol. Obviously, this is different than a structured setting that rehab centers provide to keep individuals accountable during their treatment.
Before going to treatment, understand that you cannot go back to old scenarios that encourage or even accept drug use. This may mean not returning back to your home town, or even living with family after your time with drug treatment is over. For many, living environments known as supportive housing (a.k.a. sober living) can help to provide a place to live that also incorporates the accountability aspect of addiction treatment. And, enable healthy behaviors which can result in lowering the risk of relapse and increasing the chance of a successful outcome after treatment.
2. No Additional Recovery Support
Recovery doesn’t end after treatment. So, help shouldn’t end after treatment either. Another reason why drug rehab centers may fail is that individuals don’t look for additional support. When treatment ends and people don’t have support when things get tough (because they’re bound to eventually), they are at a higher risk for relapsing.
Fortunately, there are many methods to utilize as far as aftercare support. For example, oftentimes, treatment centers will offer aftercare programs intended to provide further support for treatment graduates. This can include both group and individualized therapy. Additionally, after treatment, you can always consider going to 12 step groups, like AA or NA, to get the community support you need. And, develop supportive relationships with others in recovery to help you along your way.
3. A Lack of Commitment to Recovery
For whatever reason, sometimes, individuals aren’t committed enough to their recovery. Sometimes, this is due to being court-ordered to attend rehab. Or, when families threaten to remove a family member from financial aid or even family affairs in general. In these situations, individuals don’t choose to go to treatment themselves. And, when this happens, sadly, treatment isn’t going to be enough.
People should go to treatment and get the help they need when they decide it’s best for them. Otherwise, there isn’t a commitment to recovery. Healing from recovery is NEVER easy. And, it’s important to understand that it’s not easy before entering into treatment. This way, people can be prepared for what’s ahead and decide what’s best for them while understanding what’s in store.
4. Ineffective Rehab Approaches
Addiction is a different experience for everyone. So, treatment should be unique to each individual experience. If it’s not, the chances of getting what you need out of treatment could be minimal. For example, one person may have developed an addiction due to attempting to deal with traumatic circumstances in her lifetime. Dealing with this trauma during treatment is crucial to recovery. This way, once treatment ends, she can deal with triggers of trauma without having to use drugs or alcohol to cope.
Before choosing a treatment center, make sure that the ones you consider offer individualized treatment approaches. When you choose one that does, you’ll be able to get the personalized and unique care you’ll need to establish true and lasting healing.
